To qualify through jure sanguinis, first, your Italian ancestor had to be born after March 17, 1861.
Second, that same Italian ancestor could not have become an American/Canadian/UK citizen before July 1, 1912.
Third, your same Italian ancestor must not have become an American/Canadian/UK citizen before the next person in your lineage was born.
There is no generational limitation, on the condition that none of the ascendants have ever formally renounced Italian citizenship.
Unsure if you meet these qualifications? We will research it for you. Simply fill out our form to get started.
If applying through jure sanguinis, then no. However, we highly recommend learning this beautiful language.
If applying through marriage, then yes. You will be required to prove knowledge of the Italian language through a B1 level certification, that is required to be certified by an educational institution approved by the Italian Ministry of Education (“MIUR”) or Ministry of Foreign affairs (“MAECI”).

There are many variables that come into play. Some families know all the dates and locations necessary and some families require us to research to fill in the blanks.
Every state, town, and government agency has different requirements and turnaround times for ordering records. Some require proof of lineage which increases the timeframe of the ordering process. Some agencies even require Court Orders before obtaining certain records.
There is more than one step in putting together a completed document portfolio that takes longer than most people expect.

Unlike applying through jure sanguinis, your spouse will be required to prove knowledge of the Italian language through a B1 level certification, that is required to be certified by an educational institution approved by the Italian Ministry of Education (“MIUR”) or Ministry of Foreign affairs (“MAECI”).
Yes, but they will require certain documentation if they are not an EU citizen. They will be required to obtain a visa and a permit to stay (“permesso di soggiorno”). The Italian consulate abroad will issue the visa for your spouse to legally enter Italy. The permesso di soggiorno is the legal document that allows them to reside in Italy. The permesso di soggiorno is required to be renewed regularly. If you fail to renew it prior to leaving Italy, you will need to obtain a new visa.

The Consulate will keep all records submitted in the document portfolio. The only exception is if the naturalization certificate is the original.
The Consular officer will go through your document portfolio with you at the time of your appointment. A decision of your citizenship will be provided later.
The Consulate legally has two years from the time a completed document portfolio is submitted to recognize Italian citizenship.
If the Consulate requests additional documentation from you, then the two-year rule does not apply until they receive that documentation.
Once you have been recognized as an Italian citizen, it is important to register with the Anagrafe degli Italiani Residenti all’Estero (“AIRE”). Registration is mandatory for all Italian citizens who reside abroad for a period of at least 12 months.
AIRE is used for citizenship records for the Italian government. Your citizenship file will be held between your Italian Consulate and the municipality in Italy where your ancestor was born.
If you move, you are required to update your address even if you are still living under the same jurisdiction of your Consulate.
The same goes for any future marriages, births, deaths, and life events.
AIRE is how you are able to access the many services, including the issuance of an Italian passport, and perks that are available for Italian citizens.
It is your responsibility to keep your information updated with the AIRE registry.
The first step to Italian dual citizenship is to determine if you qualify.
Simply complete our form with your family information and a team member will email you with the results, options, and details about your specific path.
