Do you need a Visa for Italy?

Plan to stay in Italy longer than 90 days or have an overnight stay at an Italian airport, you may require a visa. 


Obtain a National Visa for Italy to allow you to work, study, reunite with family, or establish a permanent residence.


If you plan to stay in Italy longer than 90 days, it is essential to obtain a national visa prior to arriving in Italy. Depending on the type of visa you are applying for, will depend on how long it takes to process your application. 


If you are planning a trip that requires an overnight stay at an Italian airport, you may be required to have a transit visa, especially if the layover is longer than a few hours. 


If you are visiting family, your family in Italy can fill out a host’s declaration to assist in your visa application.

Schengen Region

The Schengen Region is made up of 27 European Countries. These countries signed the Schengen Agreement that abolished passport and border controls. 


If you are visiting more than one of the Schengen Countries, you must apply for the Visa at the Consulate of the Country that is your main destination and where you plan to stay the longest. 

The Schengen Region is made up of 27 European Countries: 


Austria, Belgium, Croatia, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Iceland, Italy, Latvia, Lichtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

A non-EU citizen can travel throughout the Schengen Area visa-free for a maximum of 90 days within any 180-day period 


A non-EU citizen that wants to stay in Italy or another Schengen country after visiting Italy for more than 90 days, will need to apply for a visa.
